I think you've muddled up some of the clues.

27 A. Artist in open space at back of house (7) Hogarth (ho/house,garth/open space)

28 A. Dramatist setting death(duke bumped off) during hour of church service (7)

Not a disaster! I think it's a good idea to give the clue number - I ignored this thread earlier because I knew Hogarth was an answer,didn't realise then that you'd got the clues mixeed up.

28 A. Terence was a Roman dramatist. You get it from Terce (a church service, I think) with en, from en(d)/ death. The 'd' from end equals 'duke bumped off'.
24 D. Mere is correct - it's another word for a lake, 'bare' here is in the sense of 'the bare essentials'.

Wow, so it's asking you to remove the 'd' (duke) from a word 'End' that's not actually in the clue but only a synonym of it! What a minefield. Kudos for getting that Malone. Cheers.
