Morning ChrisE. Not wishing to start bitch-wars here, but being a pedant myself I feel I must defend Les re 22ac. The answer was Lassie who, unlike the dogs who played the role, was definitely female :-)

Pf course I agree that Lassie was supposed to be female. I wonder why they always used male dogs to play her? More biddable, perhaps? (No, stop now, don't go there!)
