This sounds very bossy but I honed the rules so that , if played properly, the game works.

You should wait until the clue is declared open by the setter if you are 'out'.

If the setter does not declare the clue open after 15 mins they should be prompted.

It says 15 min time limit but the setter may declare the clue open early.

I hope this clears up any ambiguity and you don't mind my interfering.

I would think that "It says 15 min time limit but the setter may declare the clue open early." should allow sufficient flexibility.

Thanks, Chris. I've tried to keep the preamble as tight as I can and have given it much (too much) thought. I am of the opinion that 'limit' says enough but you may disagree. In previous games the setter has 'opened early'. I'm glad you have joined us and hope you enjoy the game.

It was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon! I see the reasons for your preamble and agree with them, but if the setter is checking a nil response after several minutes, you are allowing the "open early" possibility - that should do it. (I thought I had committed some sort of faux pas with my first ever contribution when no-one responded, but after opening I had a more gratifying interest.)

We have discussed the 'out' rule before. The clever solvers (I include you) find it frustrating but it's there to stop them monopolizing the game. I think most people want it to stay.....

I totally agree, but if no-one is responding.....?

It says that if an open clue is not solved quickly the setter should give hints until the clue is solved. The only eventuality we can't allow for is if a setter leaves the thread and does not respond. In that case we just accept a clue is correct and move on or abandon the clue. It has happened and we've coped. Going to cut some more grass now but will look in later.

Sorry to miss the tail end. A few good ones- notably the touch and go one, rambler, you nut (those were the days). Don't see where the extra I in Titian comes from, but then haven't been exceptionally today.
