there you are then, I was right. the number they give after the clue refers to the number of squares you have to put letter/s into. nowhere does it actually say (or in anyway imply) how many letters the answer should be. so long as you can fit it in somehow and it has some relevance to the clue any answer is OK.

I agree totally with you Philter. I gave up doing this a while ago as it made the crossing words too difficult to fit in.
