I'm still on yesterday's Guardian. Is the V word varus? (Wand on edge). And what's the w word (Little goes through water hole) W_E_E_?

Also - is the P Proser? (Religious emperor who wrote plays)?

Thanks!

I'm down to the last tw: thinking about EXILES but althoiugh I can see that IL = one pound I don't see EXES as costs, unless it's an abbreviation for expenses. The other one is X-R-P---E - any hints rather than solutions? Don't want to upset anyone...

Thank you all.

If the answer is verge, I've got:

'Fares badly on river, Canadian one, with Scots burgh' wrong - I thought it was FIASCO.

And at this stage I'm happy just to be given the answer!
