Geeez, Les!

Give us a break! We're not all eggheads. Well, I'm obviously not.
That "ixion" clue (& I missed his explanation too) was a bit over the top, especially for us "auslanders". The answer had to be, given the theme, but putting it all together ...

To quote another Monty Python character, the Village Idiot, whom I've reprised at Halloween, "My head hurts!" (-8>

Apols for my absence - have a filthy cold and sore throat.

re my 31across - I suppose it's not cryptic - hope I haven't confused ixion too much (sadly!!!)

OK Wendy, I'm confused too. That was one I had flagged.
In the US that might sound like "taking the fifth":

basically a cop-out when the court has you nailed. As neither of us is American, what's the game?
Aristo should chime in soon. (-;

Les, liking the explanations idea. It should stop what hair we have left being pulled out ;)

For ixion:

This is what I submitted to Les:
“Gordon, Fergus, Heston display best of British”, food critic enthuses.
Hidden clue (indicated by display), enthuses = gushes

Gordon Ramsey, Fergus Henderson and Heston Blumenthal are British chefs. Does this help?

Syzzie: I too (of course) thought of taking the Fifth (i.e., invoking the Fifth Amendment [to the Constitution], declining to answer on the grounds that to do so might incriminate oneself- as you suggest, usually because oneself is guilty as hell).

jamoza: I don't think ixion had a problem with it. I saw the hidden answer and assumed that these were chefs (had only heard of the first), but didn't know you could add extra words around the ones that actually contain the answer. Always learning. I certainly can see how it's necessary to pad it for structural (grammatical) reasons. Sorry to seem so obtuse.

Sorry lads - try saying PISS with a lisp.

(On reflection, it wasn't funny anyway!)

I thought your 31ac was good, Wendy. I had more of an issue with your 23dn. I wasn't expecting to find an anagram of "true" involved.

I'm all in favour of Les's suggestion in post 40.
