Years ago, my husband and I spent the evening with an American chap who was a friend of a colleague of ours.

We realised pretty soon on in the evening that he "batted for the other side".

Imagine the look of horror on his face when quite unwittingly my old man said "Would you like a fag" proffering his packet of Marlborough!

Hi Les40,

Yup - my pronunciation is the same as yours apart from "Lieu" which I pronounce as "Dew" and not "Do".

Syzzie: It isn't PC here either. Thanks for the links!
Magworth: Too funny. Our beagle's name is Woody; don't know if that registers over there.
Kiwikid: I almost choked on my breakfast!

I don`t know about `woody` and daren`t ask !
We had an American neighbour on a RAF station. She told me her husband had overslept because their alarm clock didn`t go off. I said `Don`t worry, tomorrow morning my husband will knock you up.` He WILL NOT ! she said - and explained what it meant.

Joan - do naw and nae mean the same, presumably 'no', and if so why the different spelling?
