Glad to be of service GK - the Observer is always guaranteed to be a bit of fun. The more serious daily Guardian crosswords are on the same site but I'm sure you know this already.

It really hisses me off that The Times see fit to charge a subscription when others are there for free and for nothing!

Me,too! But s'thing else:this is absurd --- after a day spent solving some of the more difficult cryptics successfully,my mind has gone blank on the last one in E'man,viz.2d.Why on earth (ha!ha!) is it EARTHY,as I've seen confirmed on that other forum ---why the Y,to be even more obtuse?Seeems to be the only normal word that fits, but where is the hint in the clue to the solution itself? Think I must be going off my rocker (if we still say that) --- not surprising in a way,though...Over to you!Great danger I shall slap myself, and I'm not really a maso type....

Curiosity drove me to the web where the clue is "Blue celestial body close to Mercury (6)
" Blue, as in earthy/vulgar and "earthy" could be said to describe the "celestial body close to Mercury"?

Aha, I see what you mean (haven't done the puzzle myself).

I suppose to be blue is to be a bit risque and therefore to be "earthy".
