I'm not sure that I agree that this is a particularly enjoyable crossword. I haven't heard of most of the "charaters", so I am doing the puzzle with a very useful Wikipedia list open in front of me!

It's so much quicker with a list on Wikipaedia. My father gave me the complete works of Dickens (14 volumes !) when I was 16
and in those days (before computers) we used to refer to the books when doing general knowledge crosswords. I still have them all, but have read only 3/4 of them.

Hi jazzgirl.
If I'd had to look through 14 volumes to find some of these obscure names, I am fairly sure that I would have given up by now!
Happy New Year

Thoroughly enjoyed this - but would appreciate help on last three.

19a Musician Jose drops it on backward Italian city. (6) _R_I_O

21d Fish with ink (6) _U_T_E

26d Insert more thread into agreement (6) D_R_A_

Thanks in advance!

Jose (It)URBI + NO (on backwards) = URBINO

Cuttle (another character I think).

Darnay (one of the characters).
