Does anyone understand the first bit of the special instructions, namely "Five of the 19 appear as solutions not further defined."
Is it that clue 19d has an answer that leads to the answers to five other clues?

Ten minutes with the actual puzzle revealed all...I was rather obtuse in not seeing what was intended.

I too can't understand the first part of the special instructions...."Five 4 of the 19"

Can't see the punctuation...is it Five of the 4, or Five out of 4, or Five and 4 ?

I too was a bit slow - took me slightly longer to see the logic. Puzzle unfolds once you work it out. Good one.

Solving 22a will help - it's one of the five not further defined. Richard of York may also help.
