Any pointers, rather answers would be much appreciated...

1 is orfe

1dn is orfe sorry - anagram of forfeit less fit (attack)

I read that as pointers (rather than) answers, may be wrong.

It's not even an anagram,it's a hidden word. Good try though for a subtle clue.
