As I said I'm no expert and have asked my bridge playing husband again and he says they have a draw because there are 60 people in the competition. He did try to teach many many years ago but I fell asleep before we got to this bit.

Could it be read as "the Y", as in, say, the YMCA, or something like that?

INROAD instead of BYROAD

I'm sure it's byroad - y inside broad. Inroad doesn't work with the clue.
