place to work out bridge opponents - 4 letters

( I have been trying to work with the card game, but not succeeding. Should it be the structural bridge?)

Are you confident about the "h" ? My non-crossword doing bridge playing, civil eng doesn't know. Could also consider a ship's bridge

2 clues down:

1)a novel way to begin letter of thanks penned by escort - 7,3
CHAP(T)ERONE

2)fork in wide street that isn't the main route - 6

my bridge question works across with 4 letters
_ H _ _
with the last letter being the second letter of the 2nd clue down
*************************************
they would work if the 2nd answer down was byroad
*******************************
what do you think?

Apparently, and I'm no expert, "place to work out bridge opponents" is at the "draw". "North" and "south" play their opponents "east and "west" after the "draw". Why don't you re-post your query giving the title of your crossword or puzzle at the top which will attract other people who might also have the crossword.

I thought the word was 'cut' for partners.
