I wondered how I answered my own question!

Can "si" be properly described as a character though AJT?

Loosely, Ixion? But if Araucaria meant it as such, I bow to his superior knowedge

And still thinking, Ixion:- Si is often used as a diminutive of Simon, as per my grandson, and he's a character!

I saw the "character rising vertically" as the letter "I", + bis, meaning twice.

My take on 30D was the same as peterm's.
Wiki verifies SI as a former name for TI, but it's a note, not a character, and nothing else really matches either:

Zardoz - The newspaper is the Financial Times - FT - often used in crosswords. Not known perhaps in Ca. o for old in this case. I wasn't looking at the bird correctly, was I?
