SORRY,SORRY,SORRY!

Please forgive this GRUMPY OLD MAN, especially PIPESMOKER, for my being so offensive,I meant none.

May I say, humbly now, that I think 12a is a very neat clue as the game refered to could be a Rugby or an Eton game or an abreviated version of a rugby game,if you get my drift.A good red herring, too.

Welcome Pipesmoker to our happy (usually) band.

Caravaggio, thank you for the explanation re the rugby clue. I had got the answer but couldn`t make much sense of it except for the answer being over one-half. Very pleased for you about your son`s PhD - not surprised you are so proud of him. What line is he in, if that is not giving too much away?

I have still got some of the `shorties` to get so may come back later in the week if I am still stuck.

Wrong number - the abbreviated form of rugby has 7 players. However the Kiwi name for the fly-half in Rugby Union is first **** - *****, and the inside centre is the second **** - *****.

Hi All, and a belated happy new year to everyone - old and newcomers....
I've been away for a few weeks, and ill for a few more, so only just catching up with everything and everyone.
Has anyone else been having trouble receiving their RTs? My pre-Christmas was v v late, and last week's never came until Friday and I've still not received this week's... might cancel my subscription and buy on the hoof..... missed reading the forum over the last4-5 weeks. Will buy my RT tomorrow - first outing for ages....
Regards
Chris

Hello again. Thank you for the welcome. Wee Jock, I deduce from the name, must be Scottish, therefore intention to offend is not in his nature. Thank you for keeping me right. Better this than continuing to get it wrong. This very month, I will invest in a copy of RT, and will abide by the rules.

Best wishes

@Pipesmoker Welcome! I bought a Dr Plumb out of my first month's salary in 1964 and I still have it.

@Mondrian Thank you for your good wishes. As my wife died when my two children were 12 [Adam] and 11 [Sarah], they could easily have gone off the rails - but didn't. My son works in the Human Resources Department of Newcastle University but has designs on lecturing in cinema. However, because of the butchering of the degree courses, he may have a long wait!

With best wishes,

Caravaggio

Dear PIPESMOKER.

Thank you for your kind words.I'm sure you will like the RT crossword and we;ll look forward to your comments. Some weeks are better than others but mostly the clues are ingenious, quirky and funny depending on the compiler(s).
Be warned, though, the subscription delivery system is very unreliable,as many will testify,so support your local newsagent.Good puffing!

REGARDS

I was thinking of subscribing to RT, but you've talked me out of it.
Welcome Pipesmoker, I hope the small scottish bitemark soon heals. How does a pipesmoker proposition a lady and scrounge tobacco with the same question? I'll leave you to ponder that. Congratulations to Dr Adam.
I'm still not entirely happy with the answer to 19d. Is it really an instrument? Where does the Y come from?
