Peterm - can u explain how the 2nd half of 19a works?

PS - maybe the unrepeatable occasion is simply puzzle number 2010 in year 2010?

I read the second half of 19ac as simply a phrase that gives reasonable sense to the first half: you can't resist that (ie death limiting lives).

I'd assumed the unrepeatable occasion was the coming of age, though you may well be right. But where is the "further help" mentioned in the preamble? And how does the title "A Score and a Half" fit ino it?

I think you've got it. 2010 = A Score and a Half. But where else in the puzzle is this alluded to?

The preamble says further help elsewhere - could just be 1A and the title - all seems a bit tenuous though - hopefully one of the AZED regulars will wade in soon with a full explanation

I agree it's all very tenuous. I just can't believe that 2 obscure references consitute a "theme". I've run out of ideas - let's wait and see.

Brain freeze here- a couple of blank squares left. 10a: Old highwayman grabbing excellent dye (7). Also, I have STILL for 23d: Calm hush over misfortune. I can see the misfortune, but don't get the ST for hush.
