5, 4, i have put worse luck, but can't tally with

only if, or cryptic only if its furnished,
so i had premises, but it doesn't work, unless its promises. any help would be great

Although I'm sure it's obvious, I'm not ashamed to say I just don't get:-
Fewer smiles from dame fortune alas = WORSE LUCK.
I see the ref to Lady Luck but could not figure out the wordplay. Would some kind person set my mind at rest? Hopefully I'll not feel too silly!

Anybody?
