Hello again. Been away for a few hours. Thanks, trevor and emf for those suggestions. I now have another letter - an O:

- L - I - G / - O - R

I still can't get it. Aaagh! Four? tour?

I know there is something called FLYING MOOR to do with a way of mooring boats. Could that be the answer, though?

I think the R is correct - but I could be wrong.

I got it from this clue:

Chief Justice among the masses? A poor placement. (5)

MA from masses and OR from poor, with J from Justice in the middle(among) = MAJOR = Chief as in the major or chief cause.

Thanks, turast and trevor74. Flying boat was probably the first thing I thought of but doesn't fit with the R. Flying gear, flying bear...I dunno. Bomb is a good thought. Also I wondered if the fortune could be some word in a foreign language. If the answer to the clue that gave me the O isn't MAJOR, what is it?

I have reviewed the answers that gave me the letters -L-I-G as follows:

The L:

Flying corps hope novice makes college (4,6) and I got PREP SCHOOL.

The I:
Spiritualist returned in glory, oddly (4).
YOGI.

The G:
Here motorist comes by train, plane and ferry journey (5,8).
LEVEL CROSSING.

The O in -L-I-G / -O-R:

Obtain bar for adjusting part of Venetian (9).
BRABANTIO.

The R I have explained in the answer MAJOR earlier.

They all seem solid.

I am well and truly stuck.

Sammy, this is my reasoning for flying bomb. Knowing = fly, g = good, bomb = fortune,
about or around the word in = through. That is if through can mean in?

It's tempting, trevor74 but it would leave me with the problem of what to have instead of MAJOR.

ASWARM gave me the M of MAJOR and the following down clue gives me the J of MAJOR - if I hadn't had it already:

Old Indian Crown cheers leader in Jaipur (3).

For this I have TAJ.

The T in BRABANTIO confirms the T in TAJ.

So I can't see how it isn't MAJOR, although I know I could be wrong. A conviction sets in when everything seems to fit so well and you don't see other possibilities. I have been wrong many times so I am not saying anything here with 100% certainty!

Sammy, surely the old British rule in India was the Raj, rather than the Taj?

Ah, but the clue doesn't say anything about British rule. TAJ (as in TAJ MAHAL) means crown. It could be a reference to Mughal or Persian rule. And the TA in TAJ signifies cheers = thanks. And what would you do with the T from BRABANTIO?
