Answer appears to be Norse - does nose somehow equate to stag?

seps round ad gives sepads - but can't make sense of it.

I think I'm pretty much there. Paler = reap backwards round L. Sepads = ad in seps. Seps is a type of snake.

But how does the first part of the clue " S’poses (not a genuine word)" work?

SEPAD is a "ghost word" from J. M. Barrie's mishearing of summat else. I suppose this is the ref to not being a genuine word. A bit elaborate (in my opinion).

Believe iot or not Ixion, it's in my Chambers under SEPAD. There wuz no need to clutter up the clue with the 'not real' reference. After all, the word IS in Chambers. I've always felt that a clue should lead one to the answer but I suppose that's why I'm not a Times fan (hope I'm not attacked for this comment!! LOL).

I really need to get a Chambers...
