Yet again just 1 letter missing and nothing makes sense(to me!).
"Odds rejected, backing is in order to make gains as before"
I have ERN?
If the answer is "ERNS" or "ERNE" can someone explain the wordplay, please?

That was my last one too - Chambers gives erns as a version of earns or earnings

It can't be erns, otherwise it would be "makes gains". I have erne. I can't see the wordplay, bit "en regle" is "in order". So - backing without gle. And that's as far as I can go.
