I'm quite enjoying the 5 clue cryptic crossword in new newspaper, the "i" but I'm baffled by this one:

"Confused noise from corporation last month (6)"

The answer, apparently, is Tumult and I can see the "confused noise" part but I'm baffled by the rest. Can anyone explain it to me?

Tum (tummy) is sometimes called corporation
Ult..is the previous month

Ult is the shortened version of the latin ultimo mense (last month)...

Brilliant - thanks for that. I didn't know about "tum" = "corporation" or "ult".

In formal or official correspondence, people used to write "Thank you for your letter of the 10th inst." [meaning the 10th of this month] or "...the 10th ult." [meaning the 10th of last month]."
