last clue 16a - Albert Finney role back in East Enders. ?lfi? - looks like alfie but don't know why that would be the answer. Would appreciate help so I can get on with my life.

Not a puzzle for the overseas crowd. These last two haven't been much fun.

Actually, 17D was no problem, but 42A ?HI?S?
No idea, after hours of Googling.

Thanks Ixion - could only come up with the Michael Caine Alfie.

To Zardoz - Thirsk

This is a little off topic but noticed the Feb Spectator celebration of 2000th puzzle mentioned in puzzle 1988 - has anyone ever been to something like this?

Thanks, Elizabeth.

It wasn't capitalized in the list I made, so missed the Wiki entry, tho' had vainly tried "thirst".
Hope the caliber improves next week.

Would be interesting to meet the compilers, but will be heading in the opposite direction, to NZ.
