1. Answered note received by the extremely wealthy diplomat (10). Could this be 'filthyrich' but why?

I wouldn't think so. The answer is one word, is it not? It might be a word for a diplomat, such as an ambassador.

Do you have any letters?

General understanding is that the definition is either the first or last part of the clue, so I doubt it's filthyrich. Have you got any letters?
