Picaroon/Rodriguez/Buccaneer/... and Serpent/Jack/Basilisk/... were two of my favo(u)rite setters. Since they moved upstairs to the editorial desk I've been doing fewer (free) daily non-Guardian crosswords.

I formerly tried the Indy cryptics most days of the week, but have become confused by the deluge of new setters. I rarely essay the FT unless I recognize the setter (e.g. Rosa Klebb, Io, sometimes Julius), since I've encountered relatively many lacklustre puzzles there.

Looking for recommendations of Indy or FT setters, not necessarily newer names.

Rob Jacques is Knut in the Indy and Julius in the FT.
I enjoy his sense of humour and precise style. He’s also quite active on X if you like exchange the odd comment.

…he also often posts one-off clues relating to topical news events.

Thanks, jono.
After Araucaria's passing, I noticed Julius sometimes sets alphabetical jigsaws, and started looking for his puzzles. Overlooked his Knut monicker.
Appreciate the X information, but I never used Twitter because I was dubious about the medium. Post-acquisition I will never use X for a variety of reasons.

I see Bluth (Dave Gorman) in the Indy today. I enjoy his puzzles.
