I just accepted a “y” instead of an “a” but according to the clue it should be the other way about I think. I’m often a bit gung ho and think “that’ll be it” without working it out properly. That’s why I often struggle with extra letters and hope to guess! Works surprisingly often.

The word lass for girl might look as though it should be part of the wordplay, but it isn’t

I've just noticed that the 7th. word in the quote should be (8), not (7). I had spelled it incorrectly.

mattrom, I just assumed it was a typo so was not confused by it. BTW, for 25a the anagram indicator is also a synonym for the definition of the answer used in the clue. Anagrind is 4+1+1+1.

Quisling - I should write anagrams down and not do them in my head ... thought 'girl' was not required - when quite obviously part of it is! ...

Gitto, thanks, I see it now. I really need to learn to think things through…. but I did have the correct answer and finished the puzzle! Not all bad.

Full grid which is very unusual for me! Only stuck with the 'set' that the extra words are meant to be and the shape that I'm rant to make. Any hints please

Good effort, sybila. The endgame requires a bit of thought. The extra words form examples of a set that would make sense to a 41a. And the common letter in the answers of those clues represents the first name of the originator of the quote. You need to make the symbol of the current period, as exemplified by the extra word in 7d. That’s how I read it, anyway.

Brilliant! Thank you quisling. That's all so clever. I don't know how the setters think all these things out!
