Well, I have solved this, I believe, but unless I am much mistaken there are more than 9 unclued lights needed.

Has anyone noticed that real money is offered as a prize, not just vouchers. Hopefully this is is change of heart from the Speccie and not jus a misprint.

Aber, yes, I noticed that - and I hoped it was because they'd decided to drop the John Lewis voucher prize which I thought wasn't a great one!

I wasn't thrilled with the John Lewis voucher idea. But now, if I win anything, I'll have to find out how to pay a cheque into my account as my bank closed it's branch here in December.

As to this puzzle, I hadn't a clue as to the subject. Thank goodness Google was there to back up and expand on my guesswork.

Scarlett has given strong direction to the unclued 5d, also hinted at in the title of the puzzle. You need to come up with a sentence that fits the unclued word counts and your checked letters. Heavier hint: the bit doing double service is the "7,3" pair.
