I agree 21d is iffy. I’m not finished yet! Stuck on 5d 11a and 13d. Hints appreciated.
I liked 8d and19d too.

Nicola
5d is 3 letter word for cool (think airblower) then the initials for the poet Eliot with the continent known as ‘the east’ inside
11a - there’s 2 of them in 2001. What was the decade after the 90s?
I have an answer for 13d but still don’t get the parsing bar the first part.

I would argue that the answer for 13d is not a synonym for Charlatan, which may be why I don’t like the clue

13d 2nd part - think of a slang word for say a theatrical or film review

Mona the second part of 13d is a type of analysis (plural and abbreviated), I think.

Very helpful, Monabuck. Thank you! 11a is a lovely clue: which I should have got!

Agree with all the comments so far. There are quite a few rickety clues this week:
12a: a schooner is a 2-______. When has any ship been called simply a ______?
13d and 21d: both require very weird accents to work as homonyms.
10d: awful surface. Has there ever been a 'grippy' icicle?!
11a and 17d are clever, though, and it's always a pleasure to discover a new word (5d).

monabuck@13: agreed on 13 (charlatan), but I don't have Chambers, which would be the authority.

Chambers…
Charlatan “Someone who pretends”
Answer “To be what one is not”

Close enough I think.
