The Half-cut apes clue would need to include former if it referred to the usual geographical location of the answer. There is a current alternative.

Cases is a containment indicator

You need to think about whether each element of the string obeys the instructions as well

Dylan @ #24 - Start from top left with the first across answer from Set B (the first across answer from Set A goes directly beneath it). There are 14 acrosses in Set B so count down for the symmetrical entry (180 degree symmetry throughout).

Wow, that was tough - some really difficult clues for me - easily the hardest Listener for many months IMO. I can see that one of the 'strings' fits the criteria from the Set B message, but I don't understand the significance of any of the strings of apparently random letters. I guess I don't need to.

jBird54, as the Wikipedia page states there are n of these things and there are n strings of lower case letters in the grid. Each string illustrates a different one of the n groups. Only one satisfies the constraint provided by the B clues.

Thanks dodgepot, but I don’t get it.
Half cut apes involves something much more related to South America than Africa?
Sailors turfed for me is a charade clue, two separate pieces joined, one after the other, not one enclosing the other?
I thought both my answers were ok, but now I wonder!!

Dylan, the second country listed in Chambers for the answer is definitely in Africa.
