Bit harder than usual with some good stuff.
Liked 26a & 19a. LOI 7d.
Definition of 23a looks dodgy to me.

Hamptonian, Chambers seems to indicate that the 23 A definition is fine.

Hi

Can’t get into the SW corner at all … can I check 18D “Sham medicine? Spot a personal problem” is Placebo ?

And, while I’m here, does 27A parse “piss” as “beer” ?

Many thanks

Sarklow, yes to 18 D. Spot, verb - place, verb, and BO, body odour, is a personal problem.

You haven't given the clue for 27 A,so I can't help with that one.

Hi

Thanks, and sorry for not posting the clue - realised as soon as I hit Send.

So some success now and just 23A “Really poor? Not he? Awful balls!” (2,3,5)

I can only think of one phrase that fits my letters and that would be more associated with drinks with ice rather than poverty ???

Thanks, Sarklow. I mentioned 23 A earlier - Chambers has 'penniless' as one definition of the phrase/answer.

I thought that this seemed different from recent Eye crosswords, almost like a different setter. A couple of questions:

19ac "Spots Roger in a rough dive (8) it looks to me as though "Roger" is "R". Is that a usual usage, and if so, where does it come from?

23ac "Really poor? Not he? Awful balls (2,3,5)" I have an answer which is defined by the first 2 words, with the 2,3 being an anagram of "not he" which makes "awful" the anagrind, but no idea how "balls" clues the 5-letter word.

All hints appreciated, thanks.
