Crossword Centre Prize Puzzle for March

If you are looking for an extra challenge this morning, the Crossword Centre March puzzle is the annual Round Robin involving clues by 42 different setters.

I mention it because I am aware of at least three clues written by forum regulars here. Perhaps there are more. Given the number of setters, I thought the clueing was surprisingly consistent and the puzzle worked well.

A pretty obscure theme, even for an American, but all in all a nice puzzle. And how about that one across, people!

Thanks buddy, it all cohered even with all those different setters; and a lovely denouement....needless to say I'd not come across the theme before and my American wife hadn't either!

Thanks jono, not something I’d have looked at otherwise. I never mind an obscure theme as long as it’s interesting, and though I thought the clueing was a little variable, it all worked out well in the end

Finished the crossword but can’t quite get the message right to enable me to make changes. Any hints? Thanks.

Without knowing which clues' additional letters you're unsure of, it's hard to give direct hints but the message relates to the name of a person, his 'companion' and his account of their exploits.

Sorted the message out but I have only had to change 3 entries not 5 to get his account.

Great, no problem jadzia, I forgot the last two words of the message myself to start with....and the relevance of the preamble's statement about one change doubling up became clear
