Could someone offer a hint or clue for the unclued 3 down? One word fits but I can’t make it fit the rest of the sequences words. Thank you.

Hello both, I was also misdirected by 1a, despite being a Scot! May I ask for confirmation that the answer to 39a is Latin and ends in M? Many thanks!

Came to this a bit late as was on holiday, no internet. Not too much of a struggle, but am I right in thinking that we have seen something like this before?

Can't say off the top of my head when but, yes, I seem to recall something along similar lines from the same setter.
