The original clue is by Taupi, a Guardian setter in the 90s, sadly no longer around.

Jono, I knew it was an old clue but not THAT old. I'm hoping it's not the original I remember, I hope it reappeared somewhere else later!

Thanks William. I’ve amended the heading to insert “old”, this gives an excuse for the name of the crossword not being available.

Thanks, Jono. That was interesting reading, both the blog and the obituary. I do Guardian puzzles only very occasionally, so I think I must have seen the clue mentioned, elsewhere, at some point.
