GIRL? Is a RIG a large arctic (artic?) lorry?

The second one is a down clue, so L RIG heading north.
But shouldn’t it be “artic” not “arctic”?

Can anyone also offer hints or clues for the unclued 37a? Ta muchly.

Gawdelpus, 37 A is the second half of a word (I think the preamble mentioned a pair?) The other half is a Down entry.

4d/37a is the pair and they form a single word.
