After at least 4 hours of solving anf another 2 of grid staring I was really feeling deflated.

I had a similar experience yesterday, brendan - trying to find something in a long Chambers entry (under 'red') that was listed under the second word.

...would have been quicker if I'd just read the entry instead of trying to skim through it a dozen times.

That improved my horticultural knowledge. I always find it more challenging when either the definition or the wordplay can be involved in the instructions in the preamble as is the case here. A pleasing start to the EV year thanks to Ace of Hearts.
