Thanks to each of you who took part in this week’s Clueless challenge and a Happy New Year to all!
Some very clever wordplay on display. I liked the anagrams from Chris, Swarb and Tyke, the charades from Ginge and Dorrien, Aristo’s hidden and Buddy’s ‘prehistoric’ compound anagram.
SimpleSimon’s 23 was a modest subby by their own standards but hit the spot, and I also liked Paul@14s construction, (though I think tenor works as T on its own so doesn’t need “starts”).
As Buddy ever so subtly eluded to, the definition side of things is interesting because there are really four elements:- soil, rain, time and smell, any of which can be combined to various effect. I wrote my own clue for this and found I spent more time on the definition than the wordplay.
I thought the most evocative definitions were Ginge’s “rainy day and what might follow” and Paul’s “after rain smells” both of whom earn podium positions.
However, in second place is Buddy’s precisely clue compound…
This earthy smell is awful - could be prehistoric (9)
And this week’s winner, for its simplicity and poetic feel, is the late entry from Dorrien…
Smell of grass maybe sweet and laden with gold (9)
Congratulations Dorrien, your prize is three songs about rain (not the obvious ones)…
