...not quite sure of preamble.....can answers bend round corners OR for example 1st answer, starting in the asterisk cell, can only fit in Northwards or North West ??

Answers must be in one straight line. So first one must run NW (technically WNW, ie at 300 degrees) as it’s just 5 letters. The northern space it starts in is 7 letters.

Once I had about 2/3 of the answers the fitting wasn't difficult. But (there's always a "but") I can find half of the required endgame easily, and another (number not given as it might give too much away) as possibles, but finishing it? No. Not yet anyway.

As you'd expect with the theme, symmetry helps with the endgame.

Same shape, same size and (rotational) position each time - although some read backwards...

Hmm. I have four 6-lettered ones, a 9 and a 4. Others which I think might (with some difficulty) belong in the category are symmetrical (well, 4 of them are) but mirror rather than rotational. What length are the missing ones, and are they words in the grid?

All 5 letters - not answers (and not in straight lines).
