Surely it would need to be reinforced by the column to the right, not the left?

Forget that; I need to refill my grid, moving double letters one square right.

Right, now I have to get a cider brine made for the turkey crown, prep the veg and make mince pies, the latter task accompanied by the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. At least that is dependable - Radio 3 seems to have completely lost its cultural compass this season, offering wall-to-wall schmaltz (and why is an apparently hourly appearance of the Skaters waltz obligatory?)

I'm really struggling with this and still need to solve 12 clues, two of which yield prizes. I'm going back to it shortly but could I please have a pointer as to where the answers to the 'cracker' jokes go in the grid. That might help me place further answers and thus make solving my remaining clues a bit easier.

The first two down slots contain two of them, another branches out from one of these and the final one runs directly underneath it (finishing in the final section), this one has a double letter cell.

Thank you for that drxx. I managed 7 more clues after I'd posted yesterday evening and now have the cracker joke given by the extra words in the clue. The trouble is the only answer I know to that has 11 letters. I'll go back to it once I've had my usual morning stroll.

I think you have the right word, ap, but spell it using the Christmassy part for all but the last four letters

Thank you for that Quisling. I now have all the answers and can see the final prize but I'm still having problems with the double-entry cells and the zigzag. I'm assuming that the double-entry cells are in a straight line just to the right of centre and those in the bottom half of the grid share elements of both across and down answers and that the zigzag can start either left to right or right to left. I'll have to leave it now until tomorrow because there's family to visit.
