I have a friend who swears that "an orange" used to be "a norange".
There could be some truth to it.

It's true. There are quite a number of examples of this mutation. For instance, an apron used to be a napron.

Hi, can't parse last two.

1a Something modelled on The Last of the Mohicans? (8)
moccasin?

2d Show inclination for hypocrisy (4)
Cant = hypocrisy, but why 'show inclination'?

1a is just cryptic. “Last” as in a shoemaker’s tool.
