Roast - double definition. Roast, noun, joint (on a Sunday say) and Roast, verb, carpet, tick off etc.

As an alternative suggestion..
Protection covering PE (protective equipment) on A gives APE (to parrot)

Jono, that sounds equally valid - and maybe crossing letters will resolve it? I'd probably never have come up with the PE, but only because I'm more used to the PPE that seemed so ubiquitous during (and after!) the pandemic.

…perhaps protective covering is meant as the outside letters of P(rotectiv)E on A to give APE.
