Struggling this week.

18a For instance, bone comprises optimum insulating material (8)
Asbestos?

1d. Chicago station record framed by Mark? (5)
Depot? ‘Ep’ for record (does anyone under 60 understand this meaning?) inside ‘dot’ for mark, but why Chicago station?

42d. Labour with dual winch, alternately operated by fluid (9)
Hydraulic? It matches my crossing letters but I can only parse ‘winch alternately’ is ‘ic’.

Thank you, having to know the nickname of an American train station in a UK crossword is pretty poor form, in my opinion.

I think maybe Chicago just refers to anywhere in USA

In the United States, the term depot is sometimes used as an alternative name for station, along with the compound forms train depot, railway depot, and railroad depot—it is used for both passenger and freight facilities.

I agree about DEPOT (pronounced DEE-PO) referring to a railway station in America. I also agree that it's a bit much including it in an English crossword.

I don't understand HYDRAULIC either.

On another matter, please can anyone help with 1a?

Fish extra tasty essentially in small portion (5,4).

The answer looks like DOVER SOLE, but I don't understand the parsing. Any suggestions?

Hydraulic is correct. It’s the alternate letters of “dual winch”, ULIC, after HYDRA.

Killing the Lernaean hydra was the second labour of Hercules, as every schoolboy learnt 100 years ago.
