I can only think of ‘mousse’ but can’t see why it should be that.

Thank you Jono, never heard of Smollett (I even Googled famous Scottish authors and still didn’t find that name), but my bigger gripe is with 21a. Using 'pop song' as a clue to indicate one specific song is useless, there are millions of songs, how is a solver supposed to know which song the setter is referring to? Of course you can work backwards if you have the answer to work out what ‘rio’ is doing, but I was never going to be able to do that because, like Smollett, I’ve never heard of the answer. Very annoying clues.
