This is my favourite puzzle and I can generally manage it without too much difficulty. I would not normally come to this forum.
One clue today is proving very difficult to parse. "Larval excrement? With this it becomes pertness"(5). This is in italics.
The answer is evident with cross-letters but could someone help me with the explanation. Many thanks.
