7d Hint of childhood memory soon includes grand old man? (3-6), 15d Type of stance Blair first described as bad, later better (3-6), and 23d Almost from the start, English on high (5). The answers look like Cro-Magnon, Two-legged and Above, but I need help parsing them.

23 Ab Ovo is Latin for 'from the start', Abov is 'almost'+E from the beginning ('start') of English.

Cro-Magnon parses as C (hint of childhood), ROM (memory), followed by G (grand) inside ANON (soon). Defn. "old man"

7 D It's from Eric Blair (real name of George Orwell) , in 'Animal Farm'.

Thanks, geeker and malone. In 7d I could see the G inside Anon and the definition as Old Man but had forgotten Rom for memory. I didn't know the Latin Ab Ovo, nor that Eric Blair was George Orwell's real name, and haven't read Animal Farm.
