23A Clue is : Daisy hasn't got a posh frock

From other clues already solved the letters I have are ?o?n

From the clue above the only word I can think of that fits is: "gown" but I cannot workout how the compiler's clues from the clue get you to "gown"

So either I have got the word wrong or I have failed to how the clue leads to the word

Any help is appreciated

Thanks

A gowan is a daisy - if you take out the 'a', (Daisy hasn't got a) you get gown, posh frock.

Hi Mop
I just shrugged and though "a gowan must be a word for a daisy". Apparently it's Scots - hardly fair without an indicator.

ChrisE, Chambers has 'Scotland and N. Eng. dialect' in the definition - but maybe still a little unfair without an indicator. It's not a puzzle I do, so I don't know the usual conventions for it.

Thanks all for the replies. The quotes about gowan being a daisy seem to all relate to the 18th century and of course there are several Scots dialects, some of which such as "Doric " in the NE of Scotland is almost a foreign language to those from the Central Belt or the Highlands

Anyway maybe gowan was more common over most of Scotland during , say, the 18th century than now

Hardly fair I'd have thought to most solvers with no indication of the Scottish dialect, as one respondent said and I had more difficulties on this occasion with the RT compiler's clues than on most other occasions
