Finally got this one figured out, lots of laughs in there. Took much longer than usual, quite hard until it all suddenly made sense today. COD 25, 19d, 1a and 22a.

Brendan, in one of those occasional crossword coincidences, the word we discussed @57-60 appears in the October Harpers puzzle buddy just posted.

[Possible spoiler alert, but I don't think you usually work on the Harpers]

I read Stranger in a strange land. Horrible book - even worse than Starship Troopers. Some of his others ones were good, though - Double star is one of my favourites.

I was away at the weekend, so didn't attempt this, but probably wouldn't have anyway as it was
a) Paul
b) seemed to have a lot of cross-references clues

Me @73
Reconsidering, I think Starship Troopers is actually one of the worst books I've ever read. If you want to read about humans fighting off aliens, read Ender's Game instead - one of the great SF books.

Got there eventually. Stressful week driving down the M6 and battling with hospital parking, but husband is home now and we raced through the last half dozen or so. FOI 5d after the hint in the forum, LOI q3 after getting all the crossers. Was typing a post to say I still couldn't think of a TAL* giant when that penny dropped nicely!

I thought that 18 was going to be ***** TOILET, so had the right idea but didn't solve it till late.

Some very ingenious and amusing clues, all very fair, though 1d is a new word, and one to remember for Scrabble!
