Is Ludwig a debutant setter? Don't recall seeing his name.
Difficult themed puzzle, not sure I liked it but definitely challenging.

There's a TV detective series starting tonight with the "detective" a crossword compiler with the pseudonym Ludwig. I suspect a connecion.

My thoughts too.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Alan Connor didn’t have a hand in this. 10a, for example, has a distinctly Everyman feel.

He was involved when they did something similar under the name Sphinx to coincide with an episode of Inside No.9.

I know nothing of the BBC series, so had no idea.
