26a Advance payment had initially riled workers' nemesis? (8) The answer looks as if it might be Anteater, but I can't parse it?

ANTE is advanced payment, had is ATE and initially riled is R.

Workers being ANTS.

19 D has me confused!

Encrypt using R for D again (6)

_ N _ O _ E

The answer is obviously ENCODE or ENCORE...
... but which is it? For me the clue is not at all clear.

I agree it's a poor clue. FWIW I would side with ENCORE, because I think "using R for D" is tantamount to "replacing D with R", but I'm sure others will disagree

Thank you quisling.

Fyi exactly the same problem applies to 48A in Saturday's Times Jumbo:

Bound, we're told, to be celebrated. (%)

The answer is either FATED or FETED... but which is it? On balance I think I'd probably go for FETED, but the 'we're told' could easily apply to either half of the clue!

Agreed. Just as poor a clue. I think "we're told" more naturally qualifies "bound", not least because of the comma after told, so I too would go with FETED
