I've not parsed it, though - can't decide if "air marshal" is part of the construction, or if it refers to "Bomber" Harris.

I think the 'croooked' in the clue leads to the anagram of 'air marshal', after the 'turning' of the abbreviation for Alaska?

I think coincidence is most likely. Harris’ rank as CinC Bomber Command was Air Chief Marshall.
