Am I just having a very grumpy morning or was this a new low? The “reducing chains” idea was ok but I thought the quality of most of the clues was particularly poor.

Yes, it is a rather brisk walk through today although I'm struggling with 8d One going in lower, not both (7). Would be grateful for hint.

Definition (which is a bit weak) is “not both”. “Lower” is 6 letters beginning with N.

I'm conflicted because I haven't finished it yet, so it seems a bit much to complain of dumbing down.

I am also very reluctant to show any ingratitude to compilers, none of which earn even the minimum wage.

Having said that there are some deplorably weak clues here. I hope the highly-regarded Doc is not suffering from a touch of the Bidens

Could I check 9d ?

Vieux? (3,6)

Is it “old French” ?

Thanks

Jack, re your opening post - you weren't just having a very grumpy morning, it was a pretty disappointing puzzle! I sometimes feel that Doc is just going through the motions now, his setting is nowhere near as clever, well-put together as in the past.

Sadly I have to agree. 9d is a prime example.
