There being no new entries since 8:00 last night, I am calling it an hour early:
My shortlist included geeker 6 and amej 25 with their auto racing references (and I learned the auto-racing connotation of "paddock", to boot), and paul 10 and darla 20, who, for reasons we shall not explore, both went the "torture" route. I liked the surface in ss 15.
But the winner of this race is geeker 6, for splitting a 5-letter hidden across three words, and neatly encapsulating the history of NASCAR in seven words:
Banked oval arising in stock car tradition (5, down clue)
Congrats geeker and thanks all for playing.
